National Spinal Cord Injury Awareness

November 22, 2011

Ten Years Ago, the U.S. Senate declared September to be National Spinal Cord Injury (SCI) Awareness Month

Two senators in Florida began their campaign in 2011 for the designation to increase awareness of the need for better treatments and preventative measures for spinal cord injuries.

Launch of A Project to Cure Paralysis

A Project to Cure Paralysis launched an Spinal Cord Injury Awareness campaign with the slogan “Will You Stand Up for Those Who Can’t?”  The Project’s goals in 2011 were: to open up dialogue and increase public awareness surrounding spinal cord injury, educate the public on techniques for SCI prevention, and promote the latest research efforts aimed at finding a cure, treatments, and better means to prevent future paralysis. There is currently no cure for paralysis.

Spinal Cord Injury

Spinal cord injury affects every age, race, and gender worldwide. An injury can occur at any moment, in any place. This devastating injury is prevalent throughout the United States. In fact, every 48 minutes a U.S. citizen will suffer paralysis because of a spinal cord injury.
