3 Major Types of Cerebral Palsy: Spastic, Dyskinetic & Ataxic

According to Dana & Christopher Reeves Foundation, in the United States 500,000 children and adults have Cerebral Palsy.  Three types of Cerebral Palsy (CP) include:

1. Spastic Cerebral Palsy: Seventy-to-eighty percent of children and adults has Spastic CP.  This kind of CP describes someone with stiff muscles and can affect one or both sides of the body. Spastic CP  can be subdivided into:

      • Spastic Hemiplegia experience stiffness on one side of the body; their legs turn inward. 
      • Spastic Quadriplegia describes a person with muscle stiffness in all limbs, the torso. 

2. Dyskinetic (Athetoid) Cerebral Palsy: Ten-to-twenty percent of children and adults has this type of Cerebral Palsy. It effects the entire body. The person with this type of CP also lacks the ability to learn how to control their body well enough to sit and walk. For example, their movement is rapid, jerky, and uncontrollable. Dyskinetic CP causes difficulty speaking and swallowing.

3. Ataxic Cerebral Palsy: Five to ten percent of  children and adults have Ataxic Cerebral Palsy.  This condition describes a person who has impairments in balance & coordination; may walk with an unsteady gait.

2-Common Types of Trauma To Brachial Plexus:

    1. Scaring - Scaring occurs from trauma to the brachial plexus nerve during delivery and takes about 4 months of therapy, physical therapy, or surgery. 
    2. Stretching - Tearing or stretching of brachial plexus nerve during the child birth delivery

Other types of birth injuries from medical negligence may include:

    1. Breach birth or footing presentation, can result in anoxic brain injury or HIE
    2. Gestational diabetes, leading to large sized babies and delivery problems that can result in shoulder dystocia and erb's palsy
    3. Rh factor differences between a mother and child
    4. High BP and pre-eclampsia
    5. High risk delivery and transfer to appropriate facility
